SUMMARY OF CATHERINE TOMLINSON

In the 1861 census Catherine gives her age as 33, in the 1871 census shows her age as 43. She gives her birth place as Ireland in the 1861 census, but it’s recorded as Glasgow in the 1871 census. She had become a widow in late 1869. Maybe there was a reason for the change in reporting. In 1871 she is listed as a washerwoman. In April 1881, She was the one who reported the death of her daughter. She became an inmate of the Govan Poorhouse only a month later, 10 May 1880. I (Yvonne KAY Marshall) found Catherine KAY (m.s.TOMLINSON ) living in a hospital poorhouse in the 1881 census and listed as a pauper. It lists her age as 50. Catherine's real age was closer to 53. I also found a Death Record for a Catherine TOMLINSON / KAY , 16 Jan 1886, at the Merryflats Poorhouse in Govan. It gives her deceased husbands occupation as a farmer though. It lists her age as 56 -- she was actually 58.

The next info. I have is a "Poor Relief Application" for Charles. The address on the application is 6 Farm Loan Road, Rutherglenn. The name Kennedy appears on the application also. That may be the name of the people he was staying with. On a map of that area the address appears to be some kind of large "home".

NOTES & POSSIBILITIES

The first child I could find any record of, was William, b.abt 1850. He appears as the oldest at home in the 1861 census. Received information from Kristie Holt (researcher) on the 1851 Glasgow census that looks like it's this family. I quote:"Received from the computer index 1851 Glasgow census: 552-26-24 31 Portland St., in the house of William and Jane Aitken from Ireland, James Kay, lodger, married, 30, mason, born Glasgow, Catherine Kay, lodger, married, 21, mason's wife, born Glasgow, William Kay, lodger, unmarried 9, born Glasgow"

I feel very certain that this is the correct family. Catherine's age is a couple of yrs off (that happens) and William is listed as 9. This must mean 9 mos. because Catherine here is too young to have a 9 yr old son. Census states that Catherine was born in Glasgow. There may have been reasons for her to make that claim at that time. It is meaningful however that the Aitkens are Irish and it would also explain where the name William came from. The area where they are living, Portland St., is with in a few blocks of all the other places where James and Catherine lived.

There are a few yrs still where a 1st child could have been born before William and possibly died or is with a grandparent. Also there are some important family names missing; i.e., John (paternal grandfather), Thomas (maternal grandfather), and Catherine (mother).

There is a 3 year period between William and Robert, the next oldest child born, who died early, so he is not seen in the 1861 census, where other children could have been born.

James KAY b.1860 (my grandfather) left Scotland Feb/Mar of 1886 for the US. He sailed from Liverpool, Eng. I don't know if he knew someone there first or if that was just the best place to sail from but it's interesting that he left shortly after his mother's death.

FAMILY LEGENDS

My Aunt Katie, my Father's oldest sister, told me many yrs ago that she remembered James Kay talking about Thomas his oldest brother --a cleaver sculpter and 2 sisters that died young, Mary and possibly Janet. Mary was a favorite sister.

Catherine TOMLINSON was listed as a pauper, 50 yrs old and a widow. She was living in the Govan Poorhouse in Merryflats. If the information for her age is correct on the 1861 and 1871 census then she should have been 53 yrs old. However her maiden was recorded as Tonlinson.

William KAY, shown living at #1 Main St. in Barony Parish (city of Glasgow). He is listed with his wife Agnes and their 3 children, Agnes, Thomas and Elizabeth. His occupation listed as 'free stone cutter'.

Christina KAY living as a domestic servant with an Elizabeth Bennett (widow) and her 3 adult children at 13 Parkgrove T+ in Barony Parish.

James and Charles were living with Charles and Mary Ann Burnett and their 3 adult children at 13 Thistle St in the Parish of Govan. James was listed as a Mason . Charles was listed as a student.

Could not find Agnes or Margaret in the 1881 census. Agnes would have been 26 yrs old and probably married. Margaret would have been 22 yrs old and probably married also.

Catherine TOMLINSON died in the Govan Poorhouse Hospital 16 Jan 1886. The cause of death was 'hemiplegia and debility'. Her age was listed as 56 yrs. This coincides with the 1881 census but not with the 1861 or 1871 census. Also her deceased husbands occupation was listed as 'farmer' instead of 'mason'. The death record gives her parents names as Thomas Tomlinson and Agnus Murray. It was the only death record I found over a 17 yr period that listed a Catherine Kay with m.s. of Tomlinson.

Robert was born in May, died as a baby 9 mos. later, 2 Feb

Agnes (named for her Maternal grandmother) was born. The family was living on New Street, Pollokshaws, Renfrew, Eastwood Parish

Family was still living on New Street when Margaret (named for her paternal grandmother) was born.

James, born. Family was living at 8 Melville St., in the District of Tradeston, Lanarkshire CountyDec 1860, James, born. Family was living at 8 Melville St., in the District of Tradeston, Lanarkshire County.

The family were still there, Catherine gives her place of birth as Ireland in that census. James was listed as a Mason (stone mason).

Christina was listed as a daughter in the 18971 census, she would have been be 8 yrs then, and was born in Glasgow.

Mary born. Family was living at 102 Crookston St in the District of Tradeston a little north of Melville St.

Charles born. The family were still living at 102 Crookston St in the District of Tradeston a little north of Melville St.

This was just seven months later, James Kay, the father of the family,died of 'consumption'. The family had moved to 10 Vermont St, Kinning Park, still in the Tradeston District, a few blocks from Crookston St.. Jame's death was reported by his son William, who was 18 yrs at the time. He may not have been still living at home but was probably close. He may have been the oldest male child available also.

The family had moved to 19 Anderson St which was across the Clyde River and north of the Tradeston District. Catherine is listed as a widowand a washerwoman. There are only 4 children left at home. The oldest is James (10 yrs), Christina (8 yrs), Mary (4 yrs) and Charles (1 yr). 5 Apr 1880. Mary died at 13 yrs old. It was reported by her mother Catherine Kay. The residence given is in Hutchesontown, Glasgow at 147 Sandyfaulds St.. The cause was "phthisis".

One month later, Catherine enters the Govan Poor House.
