From Vaughn's journal entries he'd started just a month out on his mission, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1951.
I’ve finished high school, two years in college, one year in the navy, and so far one and a half months on my mission here in the Central States. Also I’m engaged to the most wonderful girl in the world.”
